- You'll start your journey from Amman, Jordan's capital city, heading southwest towards Madaba. - Driving back to Amman from Petra involves taking the Desert Highway (Route 15) north for approximately 117 kilometers (73 miles). Along the way, you can make a 15-20 minute rest stop at a rest house or service station. After the break, continue driving on the Desert Highway until you reach your destination in Amman.
