ITINERARY
- Bosporus, strait (boğaz, “throat”) uniting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara and separating parts of Asian Turkey (Anatolia) from European Turkey.
- The Bosphorus Bridge spans across the Bosphorus Strait between Ortakoy district, on the European side, and Beylerbeyi, on Istanbul's Asian side, offering the chance for visitors to cross between the two continents that make up this unique and extensive city. The famous bridge is approximately 1.5 kilometres wide and 165 meters high with an underneath clearance of 64 meters which allows for larger ships to pass below. Construction of the Bosphorus Bridge began in 1970, under the command of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes who first proposed the idea in 1957. Three years later the building works were completed and the bridge was declared open on October 29th 1973, exactly 50 years after Turkey became an independent Republic.
- Rumeli Fortress Museum, located on the European side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, is a significant historical site that showcases the strategic military ingenuity of the Ottoman Empire. Built in 1452, this fortress was pivotal in the conquest of Constantinople, making it a key symbol of Ottoman dominance and architectural prowess. Today, it serves as a museum where visitors can explore its rich history and admire its well-preserved structure.
- It is situated on the banks of the Asian side of Istanbul in the fishing village of “Anadolu Hisarı”, which consists of old wooden houses listed under historical preservation protection and a small harbor on the petite “Göksü deresi”. You can make short boat trips from here and a stop at the restaurants on the shore, all of which offer a beautiful view of the Bosphorus. There is also an important Ottoman cemetery here. The main purpose of the construction of the Anatolian fortress was to support the first siege attempts of Constantinople towards the end of the 14th century. Furthermore, the fortress was responsible for controlling the brisk trade of the remaining Byzantine garrison on the Black Sea, especially from today’s Trabzon. In addition to the Byzantines and the Ottomans, the Venetians and Genoese also had a strong interest in the control of the strait. After the conquest of Constantinople, the fortress served temporarily as a military prison.
- The Maiden's Tower (Turkish: Kız Kulesi), also known as Leander's Tower (Tower of Leandros) since the medieval Byzantine period, is a tower lying on a small islet located at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus strait 200 m (220 yd) from the coast of Üsküdar in Istanbul, Turkey.
- The Beylerbeyi Palace (Turkish: Beylerbeyi Sarayı, literally meaning the palace of the bey of beys) is located in the Beylerbeyi neighbourhood of Üsküdar district in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Asian side of the Bosphorus. An imperial Ottoman summer residence built between 1861 and 1865, it is now situated immediately north of the first Bosphorus Bridge. It was the last place where Sultan Abdulhamid II was under house arrest before his death in 1918.
- Dolmabahçe Palace (Turkish: Dolmabahçe Sarayı, IPA: [doɫmabahˈtʃe saɾaˈjɯ]) (Ottoman Turkish:سرایی دولمابغجہ) located in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, Turkey, on the European coast of the Bosporus strait, served as the main administrative center of the Ottoman Empire from 1856 to 1887 and from 1909 to 1922 (Yıldız Palace was used in the interim period).
