- Azerbaijani historians have found documents in Russian archives confirming that an oil well was drilled at the Bibi-Heybat field near Baku in 1846. This well can thus be considered the world's first, as it appeared 13 years before commercial oil production began in the US.
- Bibi-Heybet (aunt of the stern) is a 'pir' located near the mountains of Baku amidst a vast cemetery. The tomb of Bibi-Heybet, one of the relatives of the Prophet Muhammad, is located in a vast mosque, very willingly visited by Muslims. Bibi-Heybet is famous for her miraculous power to heal the sick. Many of the Muslims bequeath to be buried near this mosque.
- A mud volcano is a geological formation consisting of a hole or depression in the earth's surface, or a cone-shaped elevation with a crater, from which mud and gases are continuously or periodically erupted. This type of volcano is mainly found in oil-bearing and volcanic areas.
- Gobustan is one of the world's most famous historical and archaeological reserves, an open-air museum with a huge collection of priceless historical artefacts
- "Ateshgah" Fire-worshipper temple - the first structures of the Ateshgah temple date back to the second and third centuries. At that time Zoroastrianism spread in Azerbaijan and Zoroastrian temples started to be built in the regions. Ateshgah temple in Surakhani functioned until VII century. It is known that Islam was adopted in Azerbaijan in VII century.
- Yanardag is one of the most amazing natural attractions of the Absheron Peninsula. It is a flaming mountainside that cannot be extinguished by rain or sand, and has been burning for several millennia. The frightening yet fascinating fiery landscape is actually very simple to explain: natural gas is released from the upper layers of soil, which turns into flames when it comes into contact with oxygen.
